What makes Dana and Don McCollum with North Texas A2Z Roofing Good Neighbors?

The Good Neighbor Podcast recently welcomed Don and Dana McCollum, owners of North Texas A2Z Roofing, to discuss their unique approach to the roofing business. As a husband-wife team with decades of experience in contracting, they’ve created a women-owned business that prioritizes customer satisfaction above all else.

What makes North Texas A2Z Roofing stand out in a competitive industry is their dedication to quality and transparency. Dana explained that they are a 51/49 percent women-owned company but approach every project as "a team 100%" since starting their business in December 2021. Their combined experience—Don working in contracting since the 1980s and Dana since the 1990s—gives them a unique advantage. They serve Tarrant County and surrounding areas, even traveling as far as Grayson County near Oklahoma and south to Waco when necessary. Their commitment to excellence is evident in their philosophy: "Our two main goals are to make the customer happy and ensure the roof looks beautiful when we're done."

The couple’s journey into business ownership came from recognizing their complementary skills. Dana, also a licensed realtor, saw an opportunity to combine their contracting backgrounds and Don’s hands-on roofing experience that began in the mid-1980s. Don’s expertise runs deep—he started by physically carrying and nailing shingles, then expanded to building houses from foundation to completion. This comprehensive knowledge allows him to oversee every project personally from start to finish. Their business model consciously avoids the pitfalls they've observed in the industry: "A lot of roofing companies want the job, send a crew there, and won't show back up until they get paid." In contrast, North Texas A2Z Roofing doesn't collect payment until the job is complete and the customer is satisfied.

Unlike companies that juggle multiple projects simultaneously, the McCollums focus on one roof at a time. This meticulous approach has led to their most effective marketing strategy: word-of-mouth referrals. They shared a story about completing a roof two months prior, only to receive a call from a neighbor across the street who was impressed by Don’s constant presence throughout the project. This organic growth through satisfied customers has proven more valuable than their initial door-to-door marketing efforts. Their A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau further validates their commitment to quality service. Dana mentioned that they provide comprehensive documentation for homeowners, including photos from start to finish, manufacturer registration of the roof, and a lifetime warranty on labor. They also pride themselves on thorough cleanup—a detail many competitors overlook.

The McCollums emphasized the importance of regular roof maintenance in the volatile North Texas climate. They offer a "winterization program" that addresses failing parts of otherwise sound roofs, such as replacing deteriorated caulking around roof penetrations. They recommend having roofs checked every two to three years, noting that insurance only covers damage for one year after a storm date. Their complimentary roof inspections help homeowners determine whether they need a simple repair or an insurance claim. Dana pointed out a crucial financial consideration: "The longer you wait, the more they charge you for depreciation." This customer-education approach further distinguishes them in the marketplace and builds long-term relationships with homeowners who appreciate their expertise and honesty.
